Taking the High Road
The Quote
"When they go low, we go high."
Michelle Obama
The Facts
Taking the high road isn't about being a pushover, it's about choosing your battles wisely and responding from strength, not reactivity.
The high road requires emotional discipline. It means pausing before reacting, considering long-term consequences over possible short-term satisfaction. Sometimes letting others "win" the argument, while you gain the respect.
The way you handle conflict can matter more than the conflict itself. Staying calm can make everyone feel more respected, rather than hurt.
“When you keep calm in the most dreadful conditions of life, you open up the avenues for solutions.”
Thoughts
When did taking the high road actually work out better? Relationships were able to continue, you may have slept better that night - that memory and experience can help with other potentially difficult situations.
Which situations consistently tempt you to go low? These could highlight times when you’re more vulnerable to be triggered. Preparing responses ahead of time, along with practicing calming and de-escalating techniques. In the moment, pausing and taking a breath.
Who in your life models grace under pressure? How do they respond well and what specific behaviours and language do they use if seemingly provoked? How do they keep their voice calm? What do they do with their body language?
How do you feel after engaging in petty conflicts versus rising above them? Allowing your body to remain calm, not get stressed and rise above it - may all help for that situation and any future challenges.
Ok that’s all, for now! Keep calm and carry on.
